Grigor Dimitrov crowns Jannik Sinner as 'the best player in the world' but refrains from comparing the youngster to the Big 3

Bulgarian tennis star Grigor Dimitrov had no hesitation in crowning Jannik Sinner as the “best player in the world” after the Italian won the title in Miami. As Sinner beat Dimitrov in straight sets of 6-3, 6-1 in the 2024 Miami Open final, the Bulgarian ace was asked if Sinner is playing at a level the Big Three used to play.

To this, Dimitrov had a diplomatic answer ready. The 32-year-old said that the Italian is playing at a completely different level but he should not be compared to anyone. Dimitrov lauded Sinner for his focus, determination, and dominance on the court.

I think at the moment clearly Jannik is playing, I mean, outstanding tennis. There is nothing to say to that. You see how focused he is, how determined he is, the way he's hitting his shots, there is zero doubt, so a lot of that level, it's extremely high up. I don't feel the need to compare him to any other player or any player, for that matter. Grigor Dimitrov said abouut Jannik Sinner.

Grigor Dimitrov accepts it’s Jannik Sinner’s time

Further talking about Jannik Sinner‘s growth, Grigor Dimitrov admitted that it is the Italian’s time on the tour. As Sinner has won three of the four tournaments he has played this season, Dimitrov is in awe of the 22-year-old’s consistency.

The Bulgarian star said that Sinner is able to play at the same level in every match and thus he deserves all the credit. Dimitrov then went on to declare the Italian as the best player in the world right now.

I think it's just clear that it’s his time of, you know prime tennis that he's playing. Can he play any better? I don't know. He's the one to show that. But at the moment that he's been able to really put so many matches back to back with the same level, so all credit goes to him. And he is the best player right now in the world. Grigor Dimitrov said while heaping praise on Jannik Sinner.

Notably, Jannik Sinner completely thrashed Dimitrov in the final. Despite the Bulgarian being in top form, Sinner brushed him aside in straight sets. The Italian has played the same way throughout this season.

While he won the Miami Open title and dropped only one set, Sinner reached the Australian Open semifinal without dropping a set. In Rotterdam too, Sinner dropped only one set on his way to the title win. In Indian Wells, the Italian did not drop a set until the semifinal where he lost to Carlos Alcaraz.

Sinner also achieved a career-high ranking of World No. 2 after he won the title in Miami. With this, he became the first Italian to be ranked No. 2 in the world.
