49ers rookie set to make long-awaited debut in Week 11
Trevor Ruszkowski-USA TODAY Sports

Darrell Luter Jr. has had a long wait to show the San Francisco 49ers what he can do after being selected in the fifth round of this year's draft.

He may finally get the opportunity to do so in Sunday's Week 11 clash with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers after being activated from the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list.

South Alabama product Luter was placed on PUP to start the season having missed all of training camp and preseason because of a bone bruise in his knee.

Luter takes the place on the roster vacated by offensive lineman Nick Zakelj, who was this week placed on injured reserve with a torn bicep.

San Francisco elevated undrafted rookie center Corey Luciano from the practice squad to fill the void left by Zakelj for this week's matchup. Zakelj, a sixth-round pick of the 49ers in 2022, had the upside of being able to play both guard and center.

Luter's activation to the roster means the 49ers now have six cornerbacks on the depth chart.

While he provides extra insurance against injuries at the position, Luter will likely only see special teams work in any games down the stretch.

He came into the NFL after delivering impressive on-ball production at South Alabama, registering five interceptions and 17 pass breakups across his final two seasons in college football.
