Fan follows through and names daughter after Mookie Betts following home run

An otherwise forgettable home run hit by Los Angeles Dodgers star Mookie Betts earlier this month is going to have a long-lasting implication for one family, and one particular person within that family.

Betts revealed on Tuesday that while he was standing in the on-deck circle during the Dodgers' Aug. 2 game against the Oakland A's, a fan in the stands told him that if Betts homered in that at-bat he would give his soon-to-be-born daughter the middle of name of "Mookie."

Then Betts went to the plate and sent a pitch 436 feet into the Los Angeles night.

A couple of weeks later, Betts and the Dodgers were both tagged in a social media post by the fan — Giuseppe Mancuso —who followed through on his promise, while also providing the birth certificate for proof.

That is certainly some commitment to a rather one-sided bet (no pun intended).

Betts said in his social media post on Tuesday that he told the fan not to make that wager before the at-bat because "your wife wouldn't like that."

Apparently she was on board with it after all.

Here is Betts' video describing the scene.

Parents naming their kids after a favorite athlete is not really a new thing, but it doesn't always play out in this manner where a challenge was posed to the player in person, and then the player followed through and delivered.

It certainly makes for quite a story.
